Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted disease that is a common cause of great discomfort to women, though much less often to men. The trichomonad is a one-celled parasite that colonises the urethra in the male, usually causing few or no symptoms. Once in a while, it causes discomfort on peeing, but nothing like some of the bugs we’ve just discussed. And, just occasionally, it can cause a nasty and painful inflammation of the prostate gland, with pain deep at the base of the penis and fever. In women, ‘trich’ causes a burning vaginal discharge, which is greenish in colour and foul smelling. It can also cause a urethritis and, less commonly, inflammation of the bladder.

Treatment is a course of Flagyl (metronidazole), an antibiotic. This is very effective, and we have not found alternatives to be very helpful. Both partners should be treated. Trichomoniasis is not usually associated with any long-term complications.
